A trusted consulting client decided to capitalize on market demand to grow their Investments Advisory team following significant interest from their client base which is made up of Wealth and Asset Managers, Hedge Funds, PE Firms and Real Estate Funds.

With a regulatory change in the form of MiFID ii and SMCR creating difficult headwinds for their clients who generally had immature in-house Regulatory and Compliance teams, all competing Firms in this market were seeking to grow resulting in the supply of relevant talent diminishing quickly. 

Looking for a leader and future Partner of the Firm was even more difficult given the scarce talent available at this level. Previous attempts to attract candidates were unsuccessful mainly due to the competitive nature of the market, the successful trajectory target candidates were already on, and negative pre-conceived ideas about the brand and culture in our client’s firm. 

River was engaged on a retained basis to map the market and proactively solicit potential applicants. Following a detailed scan of 68 Firms broadly operating in this space, there were only 15 candidates that met the stringent criteria – a mix of technical expertise and leadership credentials.

David Young and his team spent several hours building relationships with these 15 candidates, meeting for coffee’s, lunches and breakfasts to understand their personal and career aspirations and subtly promote the benefits of our client’s vision and corporate strategy. 

River were successfully able to attract 8 candidates to meetings with our client. This allowed our client to benchmark talent effectively, gaining a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and realising the opportunities and challenges across the market.

River were able to facilitate sufficient curiosity from the most interesting candidates, resulting in an eventual hire that solved a 5-year strategic leadership challenge for our client.

In addition, River were able to secure a second, slightly more junior Director hire for the same team catapulting our client into this growing market space in a powerful and meaningful way whilst simultaneously weakening competitor’s positions.

The feedback from the successful candidates and executive leadership at our client was extremely positive, outperforming expectations set at the outset of the search engagement. The team is already on track to exceed ambitious growth targets that seemed impossible to achieve at first.

In addition, the remaining 13 candidates felt that process was dealt with in a professional, discreet and credible way. When River took the time to build relationships to deeply understand each person’s scenario, we were able to achieve an added impact of creating a positive impression of our client’s brand that would have been inconceivable weeks beforehand.
